Gold Investment Returns in 2025-2026
Gold returned +65% in 2025, making it one of the best-performing asset classes. Silver outperformed with +147% returns, driven by industrial demand from AI data centres and EV manufacturing. In Q1 2026, gold corrected 21.9% from its January all-time high of $5,603 to approximately $4,380 before rebounding.
Analysts at J.P. Morgan target $5,000-$5,400 for EOY 2026. Goldman Sachs projects $5,200. The gold-to-silver ratio near 50:1 (lowest in a decade) suggests silver may offer higher percentage returns from current levels.
Understanding Gold Purity and Value
Gold purity directly affects its value per gram:
- 24K (999.9): Pure gold. Used for investment bars, coins, and central bank reserves. Soft and easily scratched.
- 22K (916.7): Standard for Indian and Middle Eastern jewellery. Contains 8.33% alloy for durability.
- 18K (750): European luxury jewellery standard (Cartier, Bulgari). Good balance of purity and durability.
- 14K (583.3): Most common in US jewellery. Very durable. Contains 41.7% alloy metals.
